lactate testing

Coach Tip – Seven benefits to lactate testing

Lactate testing offers numerous benefits, such as assessing your physiological baseline, fine-tuning training zones to enhance adaptations, and evaluating training effectiveness and improvements over time.

Here are seven benefits you can get from doing a lactate test!

1. Direct Measure of Metabolic Stress

Lactate testing provides real-time data on the body’s metabolic state, particularly the balance between aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. Testing can indicate the point where lactate production exceeds clearance (lactate threshold), a key marker of endurance capacity.

2. Personalized Training Zones

Lactate data allows for the creation of highly individualized training zones based on an athlete’s specific physiology rather than generalizing based on formulas like percentages of maximum heart rate or power.

3. Insights into Fatigue and Recovery

Monitoring lactate levels during exercise and recovery provides insight into how efficiently an athlete clears lactate, which correlates with fitness and recovery capacity.

4. Adaptation Monitoring

By conducting repeated lactate tests over time, athletes and coaches can track physiological adaptations to training, such as shifts in the lactate threshold, improvements in lactate clearance, or increased efficiency at submaximal intensities.

5. Identifying Aerobic and Anaerobic Contributions

Lactate testing can differentiate between aerobic and anaerobic energy contributions during exercise, providing a clearer picture of energy system usage at different intensities.

6. More Accurate Threshold Determination

Lactate thresholds (e.g., LT1 and LT2) can be more precise than estimations like Functional Threshold Power (FTP) from a power meter, which may not always align with physiological changes.

7. Useful for Various Sports and Modalities

Lactate testing can be applied across multiple sports (e.g., running, cycling, swimming), whereas power meters are primarily limited to activities where power output is measurable, like cycling and running.
